Many of them dream of continuing their journey to the Iberian Peninsula. At the San Antonio Center they find refuge and protection: here we accompany them on the journey to rebuild their lives, offering support, dignity and new opportunities.  <\/p>\n<\/div><div ><a class=\"fusion-button button-flat fusion-button-default-size button-default fusion-button-default button-1 fusion-button-default-span fusion-button-default-type\" target=\"_self\" href=\"#\" data-toggle=\"modal\" data-target=\".fusion-modal.ceuta\"><span class=\"fusion-button-text awb-button__text awb-button__text--default\">Discover THE CONTEXT<\/span><\/a><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><div class=\"fusion-modal modal fade modal-1 ceuta\" tabindex=\"-1\" role=\"dialog\" aria-labelledby=\"modal-heading-1\" aria-hidden=\"true\" style=\"--awb-border-color:var(--awb-color2);--awb-background:var(--awb-color3);\"><div class=\"modal-dialog modal-lg\" role=\"document\"><div class=\"modal-content fusion-modal-content\"><div class=\"modal-header\"><button class=\"close\" type=\"button\" data-dismiss=\"modal\" aria-hidden=\"true\" aria-label=\"Close\">&times;<\/button><h3 class=\"modal-title\" id=\"modal-heading-1\" data-dismiss=\"modal\" aria-hidden=\"true\">The context of San Antonio<\/h3><\/div><div class=\"modal-body fusion-clearfix\">Ceuta is located on the so-called <em>Western<\/em> Mediterranean Route. It is one of two Spanish cities located on the African continent, along with Melilla, on the Strait of Gibraltar. A significant portion of the population is of Moroccan origin, and although it has been a Spanish citizen for generations, it retains the language, traditions and religion of its roots.  <\/p>\n<p>In the past, one of the reasons that made this route attractive was the possibility of reaching EU territory without crossing the sea, Ceuta being politically Spain but geographically located in North Africa. In 2018, this route was the most traveled for irregular entry into the EU, with nearly 60,000 crossings. <\/p>\n<p>In recent years, as a result of agreements between Spain, the European Union, Frontex, Morocco and other African countries, access to Ceuta and Melilla has become extremely difficult. The borders are heavily controlled, The double separation wall (about 12 km, extending partly to the sea) has been reinforced: in 2020 the upper barbed wire was removed and replaced with other deterrent systems, bringing the barriers up to 10 meters high. A guard road between the two fences allows continuous patrols by security forces. Climbing over these barriers remains almost impossible, and most entry attempts are blocked immediately by border authorities.   <\/p>\n<p>It is nearly impossible to get past it. Those attempting to reach Ceuta or Melilla come from both Sub-Saharan Africa and North Africa, particularly from neighboring Morocco. In general, Moroccans mainly choose the sea route, often attempting to reach Ceuta by swimming across short but extremely dangerous stretches of water. People coming from further south, on the other hand, more frequently attempt to scale the border wall.<br \/>Many migrants remain stranded for years in the border area: some settle temporarily in Morocco, working in the informal sector; others fall back on the Canary Islands route; while still others continue to try to enter via Ceuta or Melilla until they succeed.<br \/>Those who manage to reach Ceuta from Sub-Saharan African countries often end up at <em>the Centro Temporal de Inmigrantes<\/em> (CETI), a temporary reception center with a capacity for about 500 people, before being transferred to the Spanish mainland. People of Moroccan origin who wish to apply for asylum, however, cannot access the CETI until their first interview, which can only be scheduled through an online reservation system that, in practice, is often controlled by groups that illegally resell these slots for high prices. For this reason, many remain in Ceuta for months or years, living on the streets or in precarious conditions while they gather the money needed to begin the asylum process.     <\/p>\n<p>The Scalabrinian missionaries, who are in charge of the migration ministry of the Diocese of Cadiz and Ceuta, run the Centro San Antonio house (pictured), where outreach activities (in collaboration with the Cardijn association) and recreational and educational activities are held for people living in CETI (by the<a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/asociacionelin\/\"><strong>El\u00ecn Association<\/strong><\/a>).<\/p>\n<p><strong>What ASCS does in Ceuta<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Since January 2024 we have started a permanent presence in Ceuta in the San Antonio Center (pictured) to offer support to migrant people without a housing solution. There is currently a shower service for those living on the streets, which is essential for the prevention of skin diseases such as scabies. <\/p>\n<p>The San Antonio center also serves as a foster home: in collaboration with the Scalabrinian missionaries and the Red of the Migration Secretariat of Cadiz and Ceuta, we have activated a shelter, aimed particularly at <strong>young adult migrants in a vulnerable situation<\/strong>, many of whom are <em>ex-protected,<\/em> often without documents or waiting to complete them. I am the one who opens the door for newcomers, who walks alongside volunteers, who translates when words are not enough, and who embraces the fear of so many young people who arrive lost and alone. <\/p>\n<p>Sometimes I&#8217;m also the one some kids run away from laughing.<\/p>\n<p>Why?<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>Because I&#8217;m the one who keeps reminding everyone of their household chores: &#8220;Hey, you! But then they come back and tidy everything up. Because they know that cleaning up their space means taking care of their home. arrived.<\/h3>\n<p>One morning I was notified that a new boy was coming and would need translation. When he came in, I saw in his eyes fear, weariness and a silent strength that only those who have survived the impossible have. <\/p>\n<p>We sat across from each other, and when he began to speak I had to restrain myself from crying. He told me about his family: six brothers, he the third, but always with the heart of the older brother: responsible and protective. Of those who feel they have to support the world with their own hands.  <\/p>\n<p>His father worked tirelessly, but there was so much poverty. Mohamed studied and dreamed, but need won out over dreams and he found himself saving money to leave Fez for Fnideq. He left alone, with little money and much hunger, but with the hope of a better future for himself and his family.  <\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><div class=\"fusion-layout-column fusion_builder_column unknown<\/h3>\n<p>In Fnideq he joined other boys in the same situation as him. They worked on the beaches selling drinks, always careful not to get caught by the police because selling on the street is illegal. They slept and ate wherever and whenever they could.  <\/p>\n<p>Mohamed saved up for weeks to buy a wetsuit and fins-his only chance to get to Ceuta was by sea. Reaching Ceuta, a Spanish enclave in North Africa, means, for so many migrants, reaching the European Union and claiming asylum. <\/p>\n<p>In recent years, access to Ceuta has become extremely difficult; the borders are heavily controlled. The separation wall (about 12 km, extending partly to the sea) has been reinforced: in 2020 the upper barbed wire was removed and replaced with other deterrent systems, bringing the barriers up to 10 meters high. <\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>Mohamed knew, therefore, that the sea was his only way out.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>One day, after praying for hours in the mosque across from the beach, he decided to jump into the sea. And he remembered his friend who had died a year earlier while attempting the same crossing. <\/p>\n<p>Death hovered near, but Mohamed continued.<\/p>\n<h3>The night of the big jump<\/h3>\n<p>At midnight, when the police officers&#8217; shifts changed, Mohamed thought:<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s now or never.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>He told me that the water was freezing, that the waves were hitting him mercilessly, and that the fog left nothing to be seen. But he kept going. He swam for more than six hours without stopping, with only two tools: his diving suit and fins.  <\/p>\n<p>In the middle of the sea he met a woman with two children and other boys. They had not left together, but they found themselves living the same fate. <\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><div class=\"fusion-layout-column fusion_builder_column fusion-builder-column-15 Ceuta<\/h3>\n<p>After more than six hours struggling against the sea, Mohamed could no longer feel his arms. His legs were shaking. His skin burned as if a thousand needles were piercing it. The cold entered his bones, because even diving suits lose their effectiveness after a while. There was a moment when he closed his eyes and thought:    <\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>&#8220;If I go under now, no one will know&#8230; no one will know that I&#8217;ve come this far.&#8221;<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>But he kept going. Keeping going was all he had.<br \/>When he reached land, he fell to his knees and wept. He wept out of fear, out of pain, out of relief. He had survived.<br \/>An elderly fisherman saw him lying on the ground and, without asking any questions, covered him with his jacket and offered him some hot tea. Mohamed says that sip was like \u201cbeing reborn.\u201d    <br \/>Fearful but determined, he made his way to the police station. He thought they would treat him badly. But the opposite happened:<br \/>\u201cAre you cold? Hungry? Come, sit here.\u201d<br \/>They gave him dry clothes and hot food and transferred him to a center for minors.<br \/>He told me, \u201cThat day I realized that, even though I was alone, it had been worth it to get here.\u201d  <\/p>\n<h3>The arrival in San Antonio<\/h3>\n<p>When he turned 18, he left the Juvenile Center. He spent cold nights and endless days on the street, waiting for a response regarding his documents. When he arrived in San Antonio, I told him, \u201cThis is your home. No one is alone in San Antonio.\u201d<br \/>And in that instant, his expression changed. He didn\u2019t cry, but I think his soul did. A small, shy, sincere smile spread across his face.    <\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>A few weeks later, he told me, \u201cI felt right at home here.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>And yes: the games, the jokes, the meals, the cleaning shifts (even if they ran away from me), the calls to his mother to ask for recipes, the breakfasts with the volunteers, the drawings, and the Spanish lessons gave him back something that life had taken away from him: the feeling of belonging to a home, to a family.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><div class=\"fusion-layout-column fusion_builder_column
