A stage of sharing and friendship

We welcome young migrants arriving in Ceuta, a Spanish enclave in North Africa, in search of a better future. Many of them dream of continuing their journey to the Iberian Peninsula. At the San Antonio Center they find refuge and protection: here we accompany them on the journey to rebuild their lives, offering support, dignity and new opportunities.

I am Benjamin, I am 23 years old, and I am constantly driven by curiosity to learn about people and new things. I really enjoy listening to people and music. So far I have tried to make choices in my life with the goal of changing some things that I find deeply unfair because they are contrary to equality between people, and this has led me to study social and ecological economics in Vienna now.

Beyond books: the quest for real learning

Studying as a learning method, however, has always left me dissatisfied. As useful as it is to learn from books, not everything can be transmitted and learned through writing. For this reason I decided to go to Ceuta last summer with ASCS: to learn and, to accompany on a stretch of their journey kids who unlike me are deprived of the right to move freely to pursue their dreams.

A month at the San Antonio Center: an experience of understanding and dialogue

What just one month with the chicos and the volunteers and workers at the San Antonio Center has left me with is truly unforgettable. Experiences of understanding and dialogue that I could hardly have found elsewhere. Our lives intersected for a common stage of our life’s journeys, and this sharing is among the greatest riches I have ever found. The daily routine made of smiles, jokes and tiredness between the difficult waking of the chicos in the morning to dinner strictly together, has become a home in the proper sense of the word (even if for only a month). As difficult as some moments were, there was certainly no lack of understanding and solidarity. In this shared stage of the journey, I experienced a real point of encounter and friendship with inestimable value.
