GUATEMALA
Project Objective.
Ensure basic rights and comprehensive assistance to migrants and transiting persons (those crossing Guatemala in the U.S. direction and persons repatriated from the U.S. to Guatemala).
Beneficiaries
- migrants transiting through the Scalabrini Migrant House in Guatemala City (CdMSG) from South America to the US;
- people already emigrated to the U.S. deported and repatriated by air.
Actions carried out
- Technical assistance and strengthening of House services through a capacity building and empowerment approach of the local system.
- Short- and long-term operational missions carried out by ASCS humanitarian workers for: analysis of existing conditions and feasibility study; review and improvement of service design; monitoring of project activities and indicators; coaching on proper administrative management and reporting.
- Involvement of specialist figures, namely: 1 experienced project manager for feasibility analysis, project review and monitoring supervision; 1 administrative expert for strengthening accounting and administrative systems of local staff; 9 expatriate volunteers for operational support, especially at peak times, and for in-progress monitoring.
- Selection and deployment of local personnel to provide: legal assistance; psychological assistance, to support the Guatemalan Air Force (FAG) in surveillance activities and protection of fundamental rights during forced repatriation procedures.
Results
12,495 people were taken in and assisted by CdMSG with technical support, financial, operational of ASCS, during the two-year project period.
