Building Bridges through Civil Service
by Alice Longhin
I approached ASCS in 2022, through participation in the Io Ci Sto camp. From that moment, I became more and more interested in migration issues and participated in other camps, discovering the border realities that exist in Italy. I realized that the territory in which I live is the scene of numerous social injustices, which are intertwined with the lives of people on the move: restrictions on freedom of movement, border violence, labor exploitation linked to caporalato. That is why I felt the need to do something active, taking part in the activities of Più Ponti Meno Muri in Chieri, the town where I grew up.
Slowly I began to participate in workshops in schools, camps, training weekends, becoming part of a group of people who were active and determined to bring about change.
When I finished college and had to choose what to do next, the reality of ASCS immediately came to mind. Community service seemed like a good opportunity for growth, and doing it in a family setting and carrying on a work I believe in convinced me. So in September I started, choosing to continue my engagement with ASCS but from a different perspective.
Civil service has thus proven to be a key part of continuing to build bridges, to bring awareness and to break down walls.
