Maison Effatà is located in what used to be the rectory of Notre Dame Cathedral in the center of Calais, a city in northern France where large numbers of transients hoping to reach the United Kingdom converge. The House houses frail men who are offered protection, health care, shelter, as well as recreational activities. The basic idea is to be not just a guesthouse, but a place for sharing and relationships. Since its inception in January 2024, the House has hosted more than 150 transients and has also provided occasional hospitality to family members of shipwreck victims.

My name is Debora and I am from the province of Turin. In February 2025 I left with ASCS to participate in the “Border” project in Calais, where I lived for two months at Maison Effatà. It was an experience that deeply marked my way of looking at the future and my sense of social engagement.

When I think about the future, I find myself suspended between the most absolute cynicism and the most anarchic utopia. I choose to be in the middle, trying to act in the local and the small, because it is there that I can see recognized the values in which I believe and which I consider indispensable, which can be summarized as justice and solidarity. I firmly believe that every concrete gesture, even the smallest, has meaning and that solidarity cannot come from the system, but from individuals coming together for a hope for justice.

In my experience in Calais, I experienced just that. Maison Effatà was a small host community where I was able to build authentic personal relationships with the kids we were hosting. What I did not expect was that those relationships would last over time, turning into true friendships that continue to this day. This experience has shown me that acting in the small is not only possible, but can generate real and lasting changes, both for the recipient and the giver.

This is just one of the many stories and testimonies of our volunteers who choose to put themselves out there every day. Click here to read the General’s story, which we experienced at Maison Effatà and still carry in our hearts.

To be able to keep the doors of our Houses in Calais, Ceuta, Cape Town and Rome open, we need you. Your support turns into immediate protection for people on the move, like Marwan.
