To the infinite hope in Humanity!

My name is Antonina, Nina for ASCS. I was born and raised in the Sicilian hinterland, in the mountains among pastures and durum wheat, in a small village in the middle of nature, Leonforte. I spent years in Emilia-Romagna for work, I was a support teacher in secondary school. My last year as a teacher I did it in Sicily, in a small town near mine, and I taught math. In the meantime, I was trying competitions in the agricultural field, since I have a degree in agricultural science, and last year I won one so from October 2021 I am in Genoa working for Mipaaf (ministry of agricultural policies) as an inspector in the agribusiness sector. To protect the consumer, we defend made in Italy and all agri-food products from any fraud or unfair practices. However, my job is a parenthesis, a small part of me … another part is the volunteer work I have done and try to do in my daily life … I have always had this “thirst” and in 2016/2017 I met ASCS … at that time I was working in the province of Ravenna and on weekends I enjoyed going to Milan to attend the volunteer course organized by them. It was interesting because more than giving me information about migrants, it gave me information/stimuli about myself and my possible approach to volunteering. A wonderful experience that then blossomed into leaving for Mozambique for 3 months. Mozambique was a strong experience, not an easy one that made me know myself better, with my limitations and my merits. It made me feel so much the luck and responsibility of being born “white” and in a lucky place. I live beautiful memories of Mozambique because of the places, the landscapes, the experiences and the encounters with the local people…this makes me feel rich! but at the same time responsible for my own life and the lives of others…I felt even more sensitized on the issue of equality so much desired and inequality, instead, experienced. This experience has nurtured in me a sense of brotherhood — after all, outside of time, place, skin color, we are all the same, we are all brothers, we are all human beings. As in a family in which there are siblings who take different paths, with different experiences, different paths, we try to stay together, help those who may be in times of difficulty, and move forward trying to live as best/most humanly as possible the Life we have been given. Certainly in Mozambique I consolidated my idea about the importance of a sense of humanity, simplicity, the value of small things, affection and esteem that know no money-space-place constraints, about the “untying” between true values and money…the things that really matter in life do not depend on money. Having loved ones is not tied to money, being happy and at peace with oneself does not depend on money, having health does not depend on money… Money is a means but if one does not use it as such one risks wars, prevaricating the other, subjugating states and indiscriminately exploiting the environment. I have heard and feel that human beings are just as much a guest on earth as other living beings but if they continue to behave as masters, if they do not change their scale of values/priorities they risk living an empty-dishuman-material-effimal life that could lead them to extinction. Humanity, I think Mozambique has helped grow my sense/need for humanity! Thank you ASCS for the opportunity given to me, for making me feel part of a “family”. I will visit you in Milan and who knows what else… Happy Camino and Happy Life Mission to all!
