Cross-cultural animation
“Why do migrant people have to make this journey and I can move around in an airplane?”, “At one point I wanted to stop and stop playing, how do you get through this?”
These are just some of the testimonies and questions that girls and boys have put themselves/themselves in the shoes of migrants facing the Balkan route. In this month, we were in Lignano Sabbiadoro where, together with the youth of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, we addressed the issue of Balkan routes by playing The Game. Also at Chieri, we contributed to the realization of the climate-themed festival Cambiavento by proposing this activity in which a group of young people attending the festival including two girl educators from the street education project “Bro Out” and Eugenio Cesaro of the Eugenio’s on Gioia.

The summer camps were a great opportunity to get to know each other. A few weeks after Through Cuneo, we were invited by an animator of the Santena oratory to meet with a group of 30 young people to whom we proposed a workshop focused on knowledge and encounter.
Meanwhile, in Milan, we held a dinner with young people to get together, exchange tales of the summer and pick up the thread again, shifting our gaze to future steps.
In Trent, the screening of the film One day One day set at the Borgo Mezzanone airstrip and account of the service experience there by some ASCS volunteers. We had an attentive audience who were touched by the stories of the Runway. Nice meeting time!
Finally, Scalamusic Academy has restarted with workshops. For this academic year, Scalamusic Academy is planning 11 full immersion appointments of all-around artistic training: music, singing, acting and dance in the service of the themes of welcoming, encountering the other and interculturalism, rediscovering diversity as richness and not as an obstacle and division.
Cross-cultural dinners with students from Notre Dame University in Rome have also resumed. Knowing the House, who lives in it and understanding the phenomenon of human mobility are just some of the goals of these meetings.
Integrated Welcoming
September at Scalabrini House 634 begins with a party: the Bangladeshi community organized together with some local entities, its own annual celebration. The House has always wanted to be open and part of the life of the local community, so hosting this party was a very important time for us to celebrate and share.
In Milan, the Italian and yoga classes, the latter being part of the Wasi project. Also in the same project, training on gender-based violence was held at English-speaking consulates on September 23. The meeting was held in collaboration with Pavia University, Caritas Ambrosiana and Cooperativa Farsi Prossimo. The women of Wasi also met on Sept. 30 for the Less is More event. An event of women’s empowerment and rediscovery of self and the richness of being able to embrace new possibilities.
On September 25, we hosted themonthly meeting of the Poverty Center Network of City Hall 1 during which we discussed together the best way to help people in need with the arrival of autumn and less favorable weather. Working with other agencies in the area enriches us with possibilities and answers for the people we meet every day.
Cooperation and development
We continue our presence in Chiasso, Switzerland, where we participated in the parade to learn more about some of the solidarity organizations working with people on the move: Collective R-Exist, SOA the Mill, Mendrisiotto Open Region, Volunteers of rebbio and Stop Ignorance of Massa and Mendrisiotto Open Region.
Meanwhile, Silvia and Elena, our two volunteers in the Scalabrinian mission in Guatemala., celebrated the country’s feast day on September 15 together with Guatemalans and migrants hosted in the House.

To be a volunteer(s) is to share a part of one’s journey with that of a community, sometimes this proves difficult other times it is exciting. More girls and boys are ready to welcome this new adventure. Interviews with volunteers abroad Camilla – Tijuana Mexico, James – Santiago Chile, Sara La Paz Bolivia, Elena and Silvia – Guatemala City have resumed. We wish all of them a good journey.
