Un viaggio tra cultura, persone e gratitudine

Hello, I am Mirco Camilletti. Today I am a family man and sales representative, but in the past, for almost a decade, I was a volunteer and operator with ASCS.

It all started at the end of my university career in 2005, with the first ASCS volunteer course in Bassano del Grappa and a six-month experience in Colombia, which then “ended” in September 2013 in Haiti with the FHRD project.

During this time in ASCS, I had the opportunity to work in various countries, both in the Americas and in Africa, always in contact with people on the move, seeking a better life for themselves and their families. Since 2013, my wife Cate (whom I met just in Haiti) and I have been trying to do our best as active citizens, ready to lend a hand to ASCS or other associations dealing with migrants and beyond.

The eight years with ASCS are and will remain an indelible part of my life. They taught me how to become a man, how to say thank you for what you have, avoiding wasting energy on complaining and instead investing it in improving yourself. I left with a great desire to learn about new cultures and people, to be useful to others, and to enter and experience life situations that, in 2005, we thought happened only in places far away from us.

Of the years I spent in the various Scalabrinian missions and projects, I carry with me the faces and smiles of the children and young people I met, the friendships born along the way, but also the difficulties I faced and the tears of the adults, which are perhaps the ones that touched my soul the most. Today, years later, I can say with certainty that I received much more than I gave.

To the ASCS, which I have seen come into being, I wish it to continue to be a collection of people, secular and religious, from different cultures, who fight every day to try to alleviate the difficulties of migrants in various international and national contexts. At the same time, I hope it remains a place where the civil community can become a voice for migrants, their needs and the causes that drive them to leave their land and homes.
