Beyond borders, humanity is one language

Maison Effatà is located in what used to be the rectory of Notre Dame Cathedral in the center of Calais, a city in northern France where large numbers of transients hoping to reach the United Kingdom converge. The House houses frail men who are offered protection, health care, shelter, as well as recreational activities. The basic idea is to be not just a guesthouse, but a place for sharing and relationships. Since its inception in January 2024, the House has hosted more than 150 transients and has also provided occasional hospitality to family members of shipwreck victims.

My name is Sofia, I am 26 years old, and my home is always on the move. Padua, Johannesburg, Ewoyaa, Trieste and again Padua, Cape Town, Rome, Calais… Each stage took its own space, was filled with encounters, left a mark. The direction at first seemed confusing, but as they say, more than the destination counts the journey, and I realized that the journey for me is walking together with migrants.

From Cape Town to Calais: my journey with ASCS

ASCS accompanied me in important moments of this journey, the more conscious ones that went beyond the experience and became a life choice: I think of the year of Civil Service in South Africa and the six months of volunteer work at Maison Effatà . How similar Cape Town and Calais are, despite the thousands of miles separating them… Seaside cities, windy cities, cities with a double face, scratched by visible and invisible borders, between the haves and have-nots, the haves and have-nots. Cities where small tenacious communities weave networks of support, dignity and welcome.

Choosing welcome: a faith in the possible

Here, my dream is here. Wherever I am, to be part of these entanglements, to learn the language of humanity, to contribute to a world that is measured not in borders but in the ability to extend a hand. It seems far away, but I choose to believe it, because as a friend once told me, welcoming is not a job, it is an act of faith in the possible.
