Regaining self-confidence: the path of Sami

Regaining self-confidence

Samy, a fictitious name, is a girl from Ecuador. She arrived in Italy 3 years ago, when she had just turned 22, at the invitation of her father and paternal aunt who live in Milan. Samy came out of a situation of intrafamilial violence by her mother in her home country. She arrived in Italy convinced that that painful chapter was now closed, but after a short time there were repeated incidents of violence within the new family context, so serious that it prompted her to file a complaint and go into the community.

The moment she entered the community, she was asked by them to take charge for Samy. At first she presented herself with many fears and doubts, wondering if she had made the right choice. She felt insecure and deeply lonely. The first goal of working with her was to build a trusting relationship, making her feel that she was not alone and helping her recognize the great courage she showed in saying “enough.” It was important to value this life force and her ability to dream a new life.

During individual interviews, the themes of stabilization and entrenchment were worked on, aimed at strengthening the feeling of security. During this period Samy felt ready to return to work, a choice that represented a further step toward protection and autonomy. Subsequently , the course focused on empowerment work, aimed at the recognition and enhancement of her abilities, both on a relational and working level. Through this process, Samy embarked on a professional experience that enabled her to strengthen her self-confidence.

Over time, she has become more aware of her own desires and aspirations, understanding that what she really enjoys is pastry making.

She then decided to leave her previous job to take up a new job in a pastry workshop, where she feels she can learn a lot more and grow professionally. Today Samy dreams of continuing to work in this field and, in the future, of pursuing her studies as well. These experiences are strengthening her self-esteem and independence, restoring her confidence in her own life path.
