What we did | April23
April was a month full of events and days of celebration in which we celebrated Holy Easter, the end of Ramadan, and Liberation.
On the threshold of the end of Ramadan, On Tuesday, April 18 at Scalabrini House 634, Iftar, the breaking of fasting and prayer, was celebrated, in the presence of Imam Yahyâ Pallavicini, the bishop of East Rome, Monsignor Riccardo Lamba and other representatives of different denominations in the Roman area along with friends of the House. It was a time of prayer, closeness and, above all, a way to rediscover the responsibility and dignity of recognizing each other as brothers and sisters, with a view to interreligiousness and sharing.

For us, it was also the month of art. Recognizing welcoming and meeting in a cultural key has always been our challenge: from March to date, the three meetings of the Scalamusic Academy. This project included three artistic training events in which dance, singing and acting are put at the service of issues related to acceptance, encounter with the other and interculturalism, rediscovering diversity as richness.
The adventure of Crossover: Saturday, April 1, we decided to stop by to see, listen and get attached. In this chaotic and hectic city that is Milan, we stopped to meet Fausta and Rete Milano who told us the stories of the migrant people who transit this city. Finding insights and sparks of humanity that are possible even in such a dynamic place that can sometimes seem devoid of total solidarity is one of the main goals of these meetings. A Crossover meeting was also held in Chieri , two volunteers from the association The Green Bus Onlus told us about their experience on the border between Poland and Belarus and showed the documentary “Heavy Metals.”
In Turin, we met with Vanessa Guidi who told us about her experience as a shipboard doctor and coordinator of Mediterranean Rescue’s medical and health team.
Within the Afya project, the online meeting “Health of the migrant population: orientation to services, health bureaucracy and comparison session“. Afya (in swaihili salute) is a project that aims to offer health support to migrant people living in Italy who struggle to access services offered by the local area and hospital facilities. Crossing borders, going to borders both physical and existential, being among people alongside them and returning to their homes with a desire to be change. After the weekends at the Borders, the last of which took place in Trieste in support of associations working with people on the move arriving from the Balkan route, come the service, training and sharing proposals for young people who want to know and be active for and with migrants. Also this summer, from July to September, the seven camps of the Attraverso23 project will be held: also go to ascs.co.uk/through23 and live this experience! We are waiting for you!
It will restart, starting May 12, The World at Home. Evenings of meeting and celebration at the Carmine Church in Milan, where each year different migrant communities tell their stories with dances, cultural events, music and flavors. Zambia, Greece, Afghanistan and Mexico are the protagonists of this seventh edition of the project. Having a way to meet the realities that make up the area makes possible an exchange and dialogue that enriches and promotes the culture of encounter.
Engagement at the borders continues: in early April, we were in Bolzano, Brenner, and Innsbruck to monitor the situation at the Austrian-Italian border, for a special focus on border police (both Austrian and Italian) checks at train stations and dynamics of migration movements.
