What we did | August23
Let’s start this September with the fresh flavor of the good things that happened last month!
Our volunteer Miriam Cortinovis left for a month of service at the la Margelle shelter in Calais, France, where the Scalabrinian fathers operate. Calais is an important city because it is a place of departure and transit for thousands of people trying to reach the United Kingdom.
Being in the places where migrants pass through aims to experience closeness and service in order to better understand the world around you and be able to be part of change.
The first week of August, Davide, ASCS worker participated in the service camp at the Spain-Morocco border in Tetuan on the outskirts of Ceuta. The days alternated between training sessions on topics of interest related to migration and caring, educational and recreational activities with people in transit.
We remain on the borders, in Chiasso, Switzerland, where we participated in a meeting and exchange with local people and some asylum seekers housed in the federal center next to the train station. It was a good time with food, music, dancing, but most importantly, dialogue and discussion. The day ended with a talk by Soumaila Diawara, is a Malian political activist refugee in Italy and author of poetry.
On August 24, we presented the article “Rejections and Obstacles to Asylum. Return on the Italy-Switzerland Border,” written by Irene Segone and Davide Pignata, ASCS workers, in Altreconomia magazine. The event was also attended by Duccio Facchini, Don Giusto della Valle, Fabio Cani, and Riccardo Soriano who exhibited and commented on the journalistic investigation on migration between Como and Switzerland.
Meanwhile, also in Rome, Integral Reception projects continue at Scalabrini House 634. We took advantage of the beautiful Roman summer days to be together between dinners and walks around the city. In the middle of the month we welcomed the boys and girls of theCamp Through Agro Pontino, who got to know the boys living in the house, sharing dinner and meeting moments.
We start again in this September with a lot of zest, energy and many new ideas!
