What we did | June23
June 20 marks World Refugee Day. To be a refugee, a migrant, a person in transit means to leave one’s country in search of peace, of an opportunity, of possibility. It means reaffirming one’s right to a dignified life made up of work, a home and loved ones. On this day, and as a daily commitment in general, let us reflect on how to make our communities more welcoming and attentive to the needs and rights of all.
What challenges await migrants and local communities in the coming years? How can we carry out activities in support of them? As every year, ASCS workers met in Rome to experience a time of training, meeting and sharing. It was an opportunity to plan our actions for the next three years, reviewing what has been done so far and imagining what more we can do together.
Like every June, we celebrated GMR by also joining the birthday of Scalabrini House 634, which is now in its eighth year. With friends, volunteers, neighbors and course boys and girls. The party began with games and activities for the little ones, then with the start of music by the fantastic Colombian group Ancestros, we kicked off the evening. Amidst dancing, food from around the world, and lots of laughter, we had a chance to meet old friends and get to know new ones. Happy birthday Scalabrini House!
July is just around the corner and the fields of #Attraverse23 are almost ready. June 24, Milan and Turin held 2 pre-camp meetings to prepare for summer service experiences. There are still places available, join in! [clicca qui]
In the May update, we told you about The Game which is a role-playing game in which several groups, for up to 15 people, experience borders, migration-related choices, and many other challenges along the Balkan route. This month we have taken the workshop to several Italian realities thanks in part to our volunteers.
Two young boys, who had previously participated in our service camps, took us to Canelli, Piedmont, to do this workshop with other young people. In addition, we made The Game for the youth of Ragazzabile Square, a project of the city of Chieri for youth activation. For World Refugee Day, celebrated on June 20, the SAI district of the city of Brescia asked us to bring The Game workshop also within an event they organized in a network with other associations. On the same day, also at the SAI of the Ellepikappa cooperative who invited us to propose The Game to a group of kids participating in summer camp.
Starting in July, The Game comes to Rome. On the 20th and 17th of this month, at Scalabrini House 634, we will immerse ourselves in the experience of experiencing the borders, the pitfalls of a journey along Europe. To sign up call 3201678407 or email us at [email protected], we are waiting for you!
The right to health is very often limited or opposed for migrant people. That is why ASCS continues its commitment to providing health support through various projects and actions with Wasi, the MAM, Afya and others. On June 28, we hosted at Casa Scalabrini 634 the Caravan of Prevention which is the National Itinerant Women’s Health Promotion Program of Komen Italy. Women from the classes, the House, the community, and the neighborhood were able to have free screenings and examinations such as mammograms, breast ultrasounds, and gynecological ultrasounds so they could take care of their health. As always, we thank Komen for the partnership and continue to work together for the well-being and health of all women!
With Afghanistan, Mexico and the final night, another edition of The World at Home 2023 came to a close. The project, promoted by ASCS in collaboration with the Church of Mount Carmel, aims to create a channel of communication between the various realities in the area. Again this year, we thank the volunteers and volunteers for their support and dedication!
The June ASCS begins with two important changes: Maurizio and Simona, the new volunteer Universal Civil Service workers began their service in Rome and Milan. In addition, Gabe Biondo, an Italian-American pre-medicine student at the University of Notre Dame, began his ASCS volunteer and internship work in Trieste. He will work alongside Donk Humanitarian Medicine health staff supporting migrants arriving from the Balkan Route until September. Gabe, together with ICS is teaching Italian classes to people housed at the shelter.
We thank our volunteers and wish them months full of meeting and sharing!
