Between dream and reality: Chiara’s experience

We welcome young migrants arriving in Ceuta, a Spanish enclave in North Africa, in search of a better future. Many of them dream of continuing their journey to the Iberian Peninsula. At the San Antonio Center they find refuge and protection: here we accompany them on the journey to rebuild their lives, offering support, dignity and new opportunities.

Living the border

Having been born in Trentino-Alto Adige, a region very traditionally divided between the two provinces, from an early age I felt around me a desire to differentiate myself from the other, from those on the other side of the border, as if just because they were in another place and spoke another language made them less deserving than me. Even now I still don’t understand this need to separate, to put oneself in different categories, and I think that was basically what drove me to live more closely Those who live the border on their own skin ..

Reflections from Oulx and Ceuta, border places

I spent first a week in Oulx, at a Border camp, and then a little over a month in Ceuta, both border places. During my time in Ceuta, in those few free moments, I thought a lot about what the border is for me and for others and how it impacts our lives. I was surprised by the kids who, some more and some less, calmly recount their five to six hour swim to get to Ceuta from Morocco, as if it was something normal and peaceful for them. Certainly being born in distant places makes us grow up differently, but it is during the games at Uno, the moments cooking, and the afternoons at the beach that you realize how much we are all alike and full of dreams ..

Volunteering in Ceuta - Chiara

Although it was an important and not always easy experience, it allowed me to see up close a reality of which we are often unaware and to reflect even more on how much what we do not consider touching us, because it is far away or does not directly involve us, is nonetheless fundamental, if only to our common humanity. One should not Never belittle the path and choices of others without having tried to understand what lies behind them; every boy I have met has his own dreams and it is only right that he has all the means at his disposal to achieve them.
