What we did | June24
Cooperation and Development
Two years ago, the Melilla massacre led to the deaths of 37 migrants as they tried to cross the border between Nador and Melilla (Morocco and Spain). This tragic event, similar to many others, is an example of the violence resulting from the militarization and externalization of borders. To commemorate the victims and protestare contro la violenza dei confini, il 24 giugno, persone ospiti e volontari/e ASCS della Casa di accoglienza per transitanti “San Antonio” a Ceuta hanno partecipato al Circulo de silencio. The situation in Ceuta remains critical and, in June, we received 29 people in transit.
Also in Calais, our commitment to supporting people in transit continues. In June, we took in 16 people in the ordinary reception provided for single men in particularly vulnerable situations. Our female and male volunteers are on the ground, offering support and essential services. Do you want to be part of the team? Click here to learn more.
Intercultural Engagement
No matter what, beyond any language barrier, cultural distance and personal difference, one can always find a way to communicate with the other. The Remix projectis moving forward: the youth group in recent months has grown and this is what we have discovered, experimenting with many different activities and languages, such as those of theater, music and art therapy.
Thank you to all who are accompanying us in these experiments and discoveries. And thanks to all the boys and girls who, overcoming a little shyness and some embarrassment with a lot of fun and a desire to be together, are playing in earnest, learning to bring out their voices (and all the thousands of other possible means of expression!), to listen to each other, giving space to their voices and gestures in an effort to understand them, and to tune in to each other and respond to them in the first person so as to create choreography, rhythmic harmonies and shared scripts.
In Project Turn, the last day was dedicated to the theme of human mobility. We explored the Mediterranean route with Mediterranea Rescue, the Balkan route with Silvia Maraone of IPSIA, and reception in Italy with Gianfranco Schiavone. Through interactive workshops, we reflected on emotions and actions related to movement, otherness and diversity.
In June, the project The World at Home with three beautiful evenings. On June 7, in cooperation with Meridian 13 and the Bulgarian Association for Cultural Exchange, we organized the evening dedicated to Bulgaria, delighting with typical food, an art exhibition, dances and a parade. June 15 was Tunisia‘s turn: the Pontes and Tawassel Associations and the Carthage Band treated us to traditional Tunisian dishes and music. On Friday, June 21, during the final evening, we enjoyed an appetizer with Brazilian, Colombian, Sri Lankan, Filipino, and Greek dishes. Youth from the Remix project and artists from Teatro Utile, coordinated by Tiziana Bergamaschi, presented a play about communication. The evening ended with the presentation of certificates of participation to the associations that helped organize the eighth edition.
Many thanks to all those who participated in the evenings, and special thanks to the volunteers and volunteers who gave their time to organize the project. Now “The World at Home” is taking a break. From September we will restart with monthly meetings to organize the ninth edition of the project, which will take place in May and June 2025. Meetings with groups of young people interested in/and on the topic of human mobility continue. In Lambiate, Gera Lario and Cuneo, we used the game “The Game” for an experience to better understand the path and difficulties of those who take this journey on the Balkan Route. In Cuneo, the third meeting ofCrossover Granda, in collaboration with Caritas Cuneo and Saluzzo Fossano, offered another opportunity to discuss these issues.
In Rome, we met with the parish group leaders of Most Holy Redeemer Parish to plan moments of formation and service. Meanwhile, it was a first time to propose the summer activities of Attraverso24. In fact, in these months, the preparation of the camps to be held from July 27 to September 3. All the necessary info here.
Integrated Welcoming
Like every year, the beginning of summer is synonymous with a celebration at Scalabrini House 634. This year, the House that semi-hosts migrants and refugees turned 9 years old, and we celebrated with volunteers/people, friends/friends, the people who have attended classes and, most importantly, the young people who have lived in the house over the years. Thank you to all the people who shared this moment with us and who share the dream of an increasingly welcoming and open community that cares for people every day.
A Milan, on June 29, ASCS in collaboration with the Aisha Project organized a meeting dedicated to women. Various types of love, from romantic emotions to self-loveз were discussed through dialogues and interactive activities. The meeting was held in the framework of the Wasi project of psychological support for women in language.
