What we did | November22
Intregrated Welcoming
November at ASCS begins with wonderful news from our office in Rome: Precious, one of the guests at Casa Scalabrini 634, successfully passed the competition to become a registered nurse. After a year of intensive study and two internships in hospital facilities, to which she also complemented her life as a mother to baby Luna, Precious realized one of her professional goals: to become a health and social worker. For us, it was our pride to accompany you on this journey. Scalabrini House 634 wants to be a bridge to the full personal, professional, housing and relational autonomy of the children and families welcomed into the project, and these great goals of the migrant people who live in the house are also ours!
Meanwhile, the training courses of the children involved in Re-Open Camps continued. This project, in collaboration with the Kairos Cooperative, with the support of the Insieme Association, which has been by our side since the first edition, provided for the activation of internships in social agriculture. This is also thanks to the contribution of the Presidency of the Council of Ministers with the 8×1000 IRPEF fund donated by Italian citizens to direct state management. The young people involved are doing a 3-month internship in virtuous farms in the Rome area. The goal is to provide beneficiaries with a new view of the agricultural world through orientation, training and hands-on experience.
Intercultural Engagement
In Milan, two multicultural meetings were held as part of the More Bridges Less Walls Remix project, with youth and adults from the Italian, Filipino, Latin American and Srilankese communities. Through workshops led by psychologists and educators with multiple experiences in cross-cultural settings, the aim is to arrive at the promotion and development of life skills, to grow listening, dialogue and empathy. From December 16 to 18, we will arrive in Naples to discover the welcoming of this land filled with contradictions and beauty.
In the new year, ASCS will restart with ConFine23, featuring weekends of service, training and sharing at the borders of Italy. Through the individual proposals, we will touch on the realities of Europe’s visible and invisible borders – Oulx, Trieste and Ventimiglia. We will be supportive of people on the move, meet witnesses, and experience moments of reflection and exchange. We look forward to seeing you in Oulx from January 5 to 8, in Ventimiglia from March 17 to 19, and in Trieste from April 28 to May 1. See you at the borders!
And if on the occasion of Scalabrini’s Canonization you didn’t get a chance to see him, on Jan. 7, we look forward to seeing you in Tivoli for the musical “For Distant Lands”, on the life of St. John Baptist Scalabrini. Also on January 7, in Bassano del Grappa, there will be the premiere of the concert Hodos beyond all boundaries.
The good news for 2023 doesn’t end there: we have restarted the meetings with volunteers to organize The World at Home 2023, which is now in its 7th edition. Stimulating dialogue and enabling space to encounter and share experiences between migrant communities and the local community is the main goal of these events organized in collaboration with the Carmine Church.
What communities will be featured in the new year’s programming? Stay tuned for more updates!
In Chieri, awareness-raising activities regarding the world of human mobility continue: on November 25, the event was held “What happens in Lampedusa? Migration explained well* *with aperitif.” Elisa Meneghini and Elisa Biasion talked about their experience as volunteers with Mediterranean hope. It was an evening to learn more, meet and exchange views on the topic of hospitality and… after a good aperitif!
ASCS on the borders of Europe
An interview with ASCS operator Davide Pignata about the very delicate situation at the Trieste border is available on Radio Marconi. A large number of people on the move coming into Italy pass through here. Whether they are transients or asylum seekers, they are forced to sleep in the open or in abandoned buildings, as there are no suitable facilities to accommodate them. In support of other organizations already working in the area, the ASCS is moving to intercept the needs and understand the situation at this border and other European borders.
ASCS Solidarity Christmas
Have you yet to choose your solidarity gift and want to support our activities and projects? You can experience an even more special Christmas by gifting your friends and relatives with ASCS solidarity products!
To look forward to Christmas together, we look forward to seeing you in Milan, on December 11 from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m., in Piazza del Carmine 2 where there will be food, art, music and dancing! In Rome, on Saturday 17 starting at 3 p.m., we will meet at Casa Scalabrini 634, Via Casilina 634 to share a time of exchange under the banner of games and many other activities! Join us!
