What we did | October24
Each month is a piece we add to our commitment to a more inclusive world. October saw us leading activities that bring people, stories and cultures together, building bridges of dialogue.
Cross-cultural animation: when encounter becomes art and dialogue
The Remix project, aimed at second-generation youth and their parents, is a workshop of interculturality and growth. Many different activities:
- Artistic and cultural experiences: Together with Teatro Utile, a group of young people from Remix attended a performance in Neapolitan dialect at Isolacasateatro. Despite the language barrier, the power of emotions cancelled distances, proving that theater speaks a universal language.
- Cross-cultural parenting: workshops dedicated to the Sri Lankan community opened up spaces for dialogue between parents and children, exploring together what it means to grow up in a multicultural society.
- Intergenerational storytelling: with Mohamed Bah, we experimented with social theater as a means of giving voice to invisible stories, including that of a tragic work accident at the Falck steel mills, reflecting on justice and rights.
Memory and welcome: cherishing the past to build the future
On October 3, we commemorated the victims of migration, a tragedy that invites us not to forget.
- In Chieri, during the Festival of Welcoming, we joined the community in a moment of reflection in front of the Cathedral.
- In Lampedusa, we participated in events organized by the October 3 Committee, collaborating with Italian students and exploring the challenges of the island through meetings with local associations in the framework of the Pilgrims.
This project carried out in collaboration with Scalabrinian Fathers Europe and Africa Region, the Lampedusa Historical Archives, the Lampedusa Solidade Forum, the Ibby Lampedusa Library, St. Gerlando Parish of Lampedusa and Mediterranean Hope allowed us to forge new ties with Lampedusa through school workshops and moments of sharing to deeply understand a land of welcome and border.
From local to Europe: networking for global change.
Meanwhile, in Brussels, the Mindchangers project, in which we brought our testimonies on the topic of migration and climate change. Joining a network of many others shows how even the smallest cog can contribute to big change.
At the European Parliament, with the #DialogUE project, we presented two years of work on intercultural dialogue and brought recommendations for social policies more attentive to people’s rights, inspired by the realities of Ceuta and Calais.
Art and culture: an expression of a world without borders
Scalamusic is back with a new season of workshops that weave together music, singing, acting and dance, celebrating diversity as richness. For this academic year Scalamusic Academy provides 9 immersive events of all-around artistic training: music, singing, acting and dance in the service of the themes of welcoming, encountering the other and interculturalism.
Meanwhile, in Tivoli, the musical “Love never says enough” moved the audience, while in Romano D’ezzelino the concert “HODOS beyond all borders” invited reflection on interculture through music, dance and evocative images.
Integral Reception: projects that put the person at the center
The Wasi project resumed its journey with workshops from Milan to Rome, continuing to build spaces for growth and listening. With the support of Project Aisha, Lds and Susan Komen, we held a workshop on how to take care of oneself physically and psychologically in Milan and a meeting on anxiety management in Rome.
In Milan and Rome, it’s back to the classroom with Italian classes, tailoring, driving school and many other activities. So many people signed up for the various courses at the Open Day at Casa Scalabrini 634 and thus began a new journey.
First Diecibel
The adventure of Diecibel, the expanded coordination meetings of More Bridges Less Walls, a space for ASCS volunteers/ae to plan together and get updated on the various activities in the various Italian territories.
Every action, project and meeting reminds us that change starts with small gestures, but grows with the courage to dream big. Keep following us to stay up-to-date and to find out how you can support our activities. Thank you!
