What we did | November23
Integrated Welcoming
The end of 2023 is approaching, another year spent in sharing and meeting. In the past month, many people have come to learn about the reality of Scalabrini House 634. What does welcoming mean? How do you promote the autonomy of a migrant person? Lots of questions from Notre Dame University and Loyola University male and female students who came to learn about the House and its residents. On the various evenings, we also offeredThe Game, in order to confront borders, frontiers and the journey of women and men along the Balkan route.

Work continues on the NEAR project, with the new adults welcomed to Casa Scalabrini 634 and with workshop meetings on living. How do you look for rent in Rome? What are the household expenses when moving out on your own? At the last workshop, 16 young people from various family homes and juvenile facilities in the Rome area tried their hand at research.
What opportunities for the autonomy of new-age children? The path to both job placement and housing is long and full of obstacles. Since March 2023, we have been participating in the tables of the Department of Social Policy of the City of Rome on Care Leavers. The aim is to create alternative solutions to support young people in their empowerment process.
November was the month of the conclusion of one of the projects carried out in support of Ukrainian people who fled the conflict. In the past year, we followed women and men from Ukraine on their journey of integration. The Dot2Dot project, carried out with Centro Astalli, Elis and Cooperativa Roma Solidarietà, was created with the aim of supporting migrants through a pathway aimed at skills strengthening and insertion into training or employment paths. In addition, support and guidance paths and workshops for women and children have been implemented.
On the occasion of the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women., the final workshop of the Wasi Casa project was held with Caritas, Farsi prossimo and UniPv. For the past two years, we have been working to give psychological support to women, help in case of violent situations, and training to women workers, consulates and community leaders in dealing with and combating gender-based violence. In the first part of the day, our psychologists handled training simultaneously in English, Portuguese, Spanish and Ukrainian languages; afterwards, Se.D workers talked about preventing and combating gender-based violence.

Combating gender-based violence is a daily commitment. We participated in the panel discussion “In Comune contro la Violenza” with associations in the Milan area working on gender violence prevention and in the conference “Libere! Migration and Gender Violence: intercultural and transnational perspectives between Italy and Brazil” with Conselho de Cidadãos de Milão, Grupo Mulheres do Brasil – Núcleo Milão, Fondazione Somaschi, Caritas Ambrosiana, where we presented the activities of the Wasi project.
Intercultural Engagement
On November 4 in Chieri, as part of theWe Care For Climate project., we heard Mimmo Lucano’s story of courage and acceptance. The testimony of a man of rare and for this reason surprising simplicity who believed in migration as an opportunity and not an obstacle and who gave another chance at life to hundreds of people. We are grateful for his story, which we certainly keep as an example of what can be achieved by dreaming of a world with more bridges and fewer walls. Thanks to the Libera Chieri – Rita Atria Presidium and the Municipality of Chieri, our faithful allies.

Remix restarts! To follow up on the camp Through Cosenza 23, we held a weekend in collaboration with the Migrantes of Cosenza right in their city. About 15 young people with different roots were present to work together on acceptance, roots and change.
As part of the projectWe Care For Climate, another Crossover meeting to talk about CPR. In Chieri, Luca Rondi of Altreconomia presented an overview of Detention Centers for Repatriation. Today 9 throughout Italy, they perform the function of detaining people awaiting repatriation. On our social channels, an in-depth Reel! The Game reached so many more people: in Chieri, Turin and Treviglio we met with ten classes and many young people. In Cremona, we brought the workshopPick Your Sizeto a class at “Virgilio” Secondary School where we played The Game and with us was a Caritas Cremona worker who also brought his testimony. Also in Trent, in collaboration with the Balkan group, we went to schools with this activity.

Development Cooperation
What motivates you to become a volunteer and go?
The Volunteer Training Course has started in Turin. The first weekend worked on the motivations and expectations that drive volunteers to take the course, the figure of the ASCS volunteer, and the value of volunteering. After an introduction on the Scalabrinian charism, some of the missions in which it is possible to volunteer were presented. In the second weekend of the course, they worked on teamwork, learning to trust, and handling situations. On handling unforeseen events and difficulties. Work has been done on the theme of interculturality.

The work on the borders: in Bolzano and Innsbruck meetings were held to discuss the monitoring initiated on both sides of the border together with a number of Italian and Austrian associations.
