20 years of ASCS!
ASCS turned 20 years old on January 30. 20 years of commitment, welcome and daily encounter in our mission to support migrants and local communities. Thanks in part to your support, we have achieved important milestones, but the journey is just beginning-let’s keep walking together!

Our 2024 begins at the border: at the beginning of the year, we were in Oulx to offer service to transients at the Fraternità Massi shelter on the border with France. One of the training and service weekends that is part of the proposals of ConFine 2024. Next meeting in Como where work continues with the local youth group to plan the Como-Chiasso border. Follow us for more updates on the fields!

But what happens after the fields? These experiences are intended to be useful for activating in one’s local context. For this reason, in Cuneo, we are working on building a path of training meetings for young people with Caritas Cuneo, Saluzzo, Fossano. The topics addressed will cover the previous experiences of summer camps in Cuneo, in order to continue to deepen the themes of human mobility. Also in Turin, the young people who have participated in ASCS proposals in recent years met for the first time in the headquarters of Pastorale Migranti Torino: it was an evening to get to know each other and exchange ideas to start building new scenarios in this city as well.
Civic education was also discussed in Chieri as part of the project “Svolta” in which ASCS collaborates with Libera Chieri, Fondazione san Fedele – Aggiornamenti sociali magazine, Exeat cooperative, Archdiocese of Turin – Social and Labor Pastoral. They will be five days dedicated to crucial issues such as human mobility, involving young people from the Chierese area.

In collaboration with the Balkanically group, we held an informational meeting on the Balkan Route involving four classes from Mezzolombardo schools. These were moments of discussion on issues related to migration. Similarly, at the Pacioli-Berenini institutes in Fidenza, as well as in Trent, the workshops of “Pick Your Size” e “The Game“.
The journey of theUnbroken Humanity photography exhibition, which arrives in Monza, at Regina Pacis Parish with opening and closing events dedicated to The Game.
As part of the Remix project, the workshop and experiential path that is aimed at young people with migration backgrounds and their parents, meetings and appointments continue. To stay up-to-date, go to the website: ascs.com/remix24
Meanwhile, in Rome, the ASCS is contributing to the drafting of the Fact Sheet – Deliberation for the approval of programs for the autonomy of young people of new age in charge of Roma Capitale services under the Department of Social Policies. The work, which is now nearing completion, took several months and involved the collaboration of a number of third-sector entities dealing with MSNAs and new adults. It was a good discussion, contributions made by all the realities present were welcomed, and reasoned on overcoming some of the obstacles that prevent or make it complex for younger people to achieve autonomy.
The work of the Integrated Housing Network on housing and labor issues. The plenary meetings are always full of new insights and proposals and see the now stable participation of more than 20 realities that on the Roman territory and in the province are involved in the reception, in the broadest possible sense, of people with migrant backgrounds. It is a crucial moment for some decisions and proposals for the construction of the Strategic Plan for the Right to Housing 2023/2026 of Roma Capitale, and we, during a meeting at the Department of Heritage and Housing Policies, made explicit our willingness to be spokesmen for the demands of the people we accompany on a daily basis. We strongly believe that building proposals that take into account different needs is necessary for the success of the proposals!

At the end of the month, a meeting with the volunteers and volunteers active in the courses at Casa Scalabrini 634. Comparison, growth and generativity were the key words to start a new year under the banner of teamwork. We talked about training and the strengths and possibilities for improvement of individual pathways alongside migrant people.
A few days later, at theOpen Day for enrollment for the 2024 term, we met many male and female students ready to begin their journey of growth. Also in Milan it’s back to the classroom with Italian, English and after-school classes and even a workshop for help with filling out resumes.

In January in Milan , we began an exchange with the city’s nine city halls, their equal opportunity departments, and Milano Donna centers to acquaint citizens with the projects Wasi e Remix and build an increasingly strong network with institutions.
And in the World? The international volunteer area saw the departure of two of our volunteers on January 18: Giulia Gamba for South Africa and Giovanna Girardi for Chile. In mid-January, the dates of the new ASCS volunteer training course which will leave in early March, and on January 27 we held a meeting with volunteers who returned from missions in the past year.
The activities described were also made possible thanks to the support of many donors, foundations, Scalabrinian missions, companies and partners who supported our projects.
