What we did | February23
February starts with news: from May 12 until June 23, you can take part in an exciting journey through culture, dances, music and flavors! This year, we will learn about, Zambia, Greece, Afghanistan and Mexico. These will be evenings of meeting and celebration in the Carmine Church, where we will get to know other cultures, people and traditions.
Looking forward to March, events and activities continue as part of the Intercultural Animation. Within the Pick Your Size project for raising awareness in schools, we offered workshops in three high school classes of the school A. Monti of Chieri. The classes experienced two meetings of two hours each in which two volunteers proposed activities on the theme of human mobility. Also on the Roman territory, we met with various classes from high schools, some of whom came to learn about the reality of Scalabrini House 634.
In Chieri, the young people of the More Bridges Less Walls met with Elisa Albarosa and Paolo Rainato, municipal managers of the Mindchangers. The purpose of the meeting was to deepen the project in order to envision future scenarios with Chieri’s Fridays For Future activist group.
How to better understand complex issues such as migration and human mobility? How to go beyond that superficial knowledge and deepen to activate? Through collective dialogues and with the guidance of experienced people to guide us in understanding, we try to give answers and ask the right questions in the meetings of Crossover. In the last one, held in Chieri, we talked about the externalization of the European border, refoulement and repatriation with Ilaria La Malfa. Find out about upcoming appointments!
“Seeing is the first form of caring for the world”: with this motto, between February 24 and 26, some activists of More Bridges Less Walls met at the ASCS headquarters in Milan to plan, train and discuss new activities ahead of the summer.
In the month of February, at Scalabrini House 634, 5 boys began their journey into semi-autonomy. They are young asylum seekers between the ages of 23 and 28 and come from Cameroon, Ghana, Gambia, Syria, Afghanistan, and Pakistan and have six months to work on achieving not only economic autonomy but also housing, employment, and relationships. What challenges await them? We will find out in the upcoming months.
In the area of the Integral Reception, the final meeting of the project Social Cultivation was held on February 15. The project proposed pathways of social-work inclusion aimed at combating poverty, promoting employability and social-work inclusion of boys and girls in disadvantaged situations.
Like many of our projects, this one was developed in collaboration with local businesses and other partners. Networking has always been considered a tool for mutual enrichment and sharing of best practices, in order to devise new future projects and ensure an ever-improving quality of services offered to people.
One year after the outbreak of war in Ukraine, the ASCS continues to take daily action to support and welcome people on the move: in Milan, a nucleus of mother and child was welcomed and Italian language classes continued at the Carmine Church. In Rome, with the project Dot2Dot, we support the Ukrainian population in the new hosting context not only from the employment and housing point of view but also in terms of support for psychological well-being.
Also in the area of Development Cooperation, our activities continue at the European Borders but also in support of the Scalabrinian Missions around the world. Starting in March, the new Training Course on International Volunteering with the aim of building a route in which specific knowledge on the topic of migration is acquired, fostering individual and community empowerment and increasing civil society involvement in the culture of encounter and integration. Boys and girls who attend and actively participate will be able to experience volunteer work in support of Scalabrinian Missions in Italy and around the world.
